Game Release Date: USA: May/7/2009 Game Developer: Action Forms Game Publisher: 1C Company Game Description: Cryostasis: The Arctic Circle, 1968. Alexander Nesterov is a meteorologist sent to uncover the mystery of the abandoned ice-breaker ship, North Wind.
This steel beast once fought for its country, but during a dangerous mission it drifted into an ice trap that slowly froze to death every living thing on board. A routine investigation quickly turns into a battle for survival against both the freezing elements and the terrifying evil that inhabits the lost ship. Cryostasis takes players on a terrifying trip into the unknown as they explore the dark, frozen, claustrophobic corridors and unlock the shocking secrets of the North Wind. Today's Wackiest Video.
Game looks really nice. Getting a whiff of Stalker about it for some reason. The comments are better though. Rhubarbandcustard wrote: Please see Gears Of War 2 (360) or Killzone 2 (PS3). A PC would struggle to run either of those without dropping frames.
Windows comes with too many overheads on the system resources. Sure, you could re-install the OS and de-frag the hard drive AGAIN, but it really is simpler and cheaper to game on the consoles. Sure, some people will stick with PC for keyboard and mouse control, but for visuals its HD consoles all the way. Pc's couldn't even run GTA4 without major frame rate issues. They wouldn't have a hope in hell of running Killzone 2. SOLID GOLD.
Perhaps because I don't buy EVERY new release, maybe? My Core i7 PC cost me £1,600 but it's the first new PC I've bought in four years and I expect it to last me that long too bar one or two graphics cards upgrades perhaps. Yeah, new PCs are expensive but the games are actually much cheaper than console ones, usually £25 or less.
That and the fact that they run and look better than on the consoles makes the PC a worthy system to have if you can afford one. The current consoles, in my opinion, are already showing their limitations which is the reason I bought a new gaming PC in the first place. Got mine back yesterday and it cost me about the same.
It's actually more or less identical to yours inside save for a GTX 295 and the RAM being Corsair if I remember what you've got. Was 3 rather than 4 years in my case, but I don't plan on upgrading fully again for at least another 3.
Maxed out Fallout 3 looks fantastic, but the HDR seems to have a weird bug on SLI which is also affecting Crossfire users. Runs fine though seemed a tad flakely before I patched it. I got my copy this morning. It's not too bad although it lacks a certain polish here and there.
Loading screens just pop up at unexpected moments, the Mental Echoes are poorly introduced with no explaination of what they are or what you have to do and I've several instant deaths without really knowing why, usually straight after a Mental Echo. The game is very linear, so far I'm just moving from room to room pushing buttons and hacking the odd enemy. It doesn't feel particularly ground-breaking in any way but it has an enticing atmosphere where I can almost feel the cold and loneliness, and the stippets of story, told via the flashbacks, Mental Echoes and stuff, are keeping me playing to find out more.
Feels a bit like a cross between Condemned and Far Cry's boat section so far. The engine is a bit creaky though. The visuals are not exactly the most detailed and don't come close to Crysis for example. The framerate seems to flutter a bit despite my PC exceeding the recommended specs on the back of the box as I have a Core i7/6 GB/GTX 280 setup. I admit I've got everything on or set to High with AA and 16X AF @ 1680x1050 but this seems to run worst than the earlier tech demo. It's never unplayable but I expecting it to run smoother than this given how small the rooms are and how little is going on in them. Going to stick with it to see how it pans out.
I'm on the fourth level having gotten past the sluggish diving bits. I've been playing this on and off since I got it a week or so ago. For reference I've got an 8800GTS 512, Q6600, Windows XP. I'm running on medium texture details at 1680x1050 It's an interesting, even innovative game, that's marred by a slightly poor execution. Graphically it's nice - the ice effects and water dripping down walls effects are very well done, as is the transition from frozen to thawed when you get a room heated up. The performance is highly variable.
Sometimes it's as smooth as butter, other times it's very laggy even though there seems to be no reason for it. There's often a momentary pause before physics events happen, and turning hardware physics on or off makes no difference. The sound is excellent, there's very little music, but a lot of very well done atmospheric effects. There's a great feeling of immersion - the player character's breath is shown in front of you, the weapon animations feel very realistic - especially when you swing an axe. You definitely feel like you're in the environment. The story is interesting, and told in a very minimalist way, via the flashbacks and mental echoes.
However there's a weird folk tale that's narrated via drawings on bits of paper you find throughout the game which seems to have no bearing on the story that I've seen so far. The heat mechanic works very well instead of character health.
The mental echo puzzles can be a bit obscure, but are quite satisfying when you solve them. I have got lost or stuck a few times, because there are sometimes no special visual cues to help guide you through the levels. I've enjoyed playing through it so far. I'm willing to accept a lack of polish or some technical issues providing the game is trying something different. I just wish it were better optimised. Cryostatis is a pretty unremarkable game to be honest and EG were pretty much spot on with their 6/10 review, although I'd say it's nearer a 5 myself. Unless you can pick it up very cheap then I wouldn't bother with it.
The engine is still as clunky as hell, even post-v1.1 patch, and that's running on a Core i7 @ 3.3 GHz CPU with GTX 280 graphics! It's so damn linear, there's virtually nothing interesting to see for a big chunk of the game, the story is poorly told and the environment becomes very repetitive (OK so it's set on a boat but even so.).
Even the graphics with the PhysX effects are not that impressive, more so when you consider how poorly the game runs. A missed opportunity IMO. Hi from Spain! A patch for Necrovision (as you mentioned the game, above) has been released: V1.2 Necrovision Patch v. 1.2 v1.2 Patch Notes: - dedicated server applications added (NVServerGui.exe is the version with graphical interface and NVServer.exe is the command line version) - additional physics, memory and rendering optimization - secret areas counter added (on the objective screen in game and in Challenge Room menu) - info about possibility to skip cutscene displayed in game where appropriate - combo special effects better balanced - minor enemies AI fixes - automatic save game added between the 2 stages of battle with first Big Boss - minor text bugs fixed I enjoyed both games. Also Penumbra Collection.
(I came to post about Cryostasis patch, but I noticed you know about it. Had it fresh, as yesterday posted the info in the spanish version) In my defense, saying I love creepy games is enough? Sorry for the intrusion: I guessed the info - as the patch has been released today - deserves to be share with anyone who may have Necrovision, another 1C game.
Looking the good side: Cryostasis is better than You are Empty, and this one, pretty much better than Instinct: the worse U.S. Imported game I have in fps for 1player. Three of them, 1C games.
So it is getting better In stealth, Death to Spies 1C´s game (2007) was funny for me. Which I consider better in this genre than Cryostasis Sleep of Reason in fps. So if you missed it. An expansion, Moment of Truth, as you surely may know by now, is scheduled for Q3 of this year:.
